Portrait Photography: Portraits of Cambodia

Photographer: Simon J. Newbury

As many of you are aware, I travelled to Cambodia in July on a photographic trip. I wanted to photograph as many portraits as possible as well as visiting Cambodia’s capital city, Phnom Penh and travelling north to Siem Reap to visit the temples. I was fortunate to meet and photograph a huge range of Khmer people. My final collection includes fisherman, market traders, water buffalo farmers, arable farmers, children, Buddhist monks and beggars.

Obviously there was a language barrier. My Khmer is non existent so I worked with an interpreter on some days and relied on candid shots and expressions on other days. You can tell if someone minds or not if you are photographing them! Although the poverty is often easy to see I found the Khmer people to be a friendly and happy people.

With only two exceptions the portraits from the collection are all made with natural ambient light. This was something of a departure to my usual style. The Urban Portrait project, for instance, was all shot using mobile lighting. Clearly such apparatus doesn’t lend itself to this project and travel so it was an interesting project technically as well as thematically.

Portrait photography has always been a strong passion of mine. To get to meet so many diverse people in the space of time that I was in Cambodia as well as managing to make so many portraits has been an amazing experience.

There are many stories to be told from the faces of the people in the collection. One of my highlights is the beggar I met on the journey from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. It is a very enduring portrait and it was only after I had taken the shot and thanked him (and made a small donation) I noticed that he was wearing a Nine Inch Nails t-shirt. That alone tells a story. Another highlight was the visit to the Buddhist Academy in Phnom Penh. It’s not open to the public but our interpreter explained that I wanted to do some portraits of some monks. We were given access to see the classes in action and made a set of portraits of some young monks!

I have made a slideshow (complete with traditional Khmer music).

There is also a gallery on the main website!

We’ve known local musician Phil Maddocks for ages and he probably holds the record for the most live appearances on our previous local music radio show. We have also done lots of music photography of Phil at many performances! Phil is currently working on an album with Nick Bayes and needed some publicity photographs for his online presence and new website.

Phil & Nick supported The Christians at The Box in Crewe and before their set we made use of the local area for this set of promo photos! You can check out Phil’s wonderful music on his website: Scruffy Harmonica

Music Photography: Kendal Calling 2013

Event: Kendal Calling 2013
Photographers: Tina Newbury, Simon J. Newbury

The busy summer of music continues and we spent the weekend photographing at Kendal Calling in Cumbria. The festival boasts a wealth of great bands, many of which we had previously photographed in Crewe. The three Main Stage headliners were Basement Jaxx, The Charlatans and Primal Scream. Also performing over the three days were Ash (former Crewe Live headliners), I Am Kloot, Seasick Steve, The D.O.T., The Lightning Seeds, British Sea Power, Beans On Toast, Public Enemy, Johnny Marr, Mystery Jets and The 1975. We had a great time visiting all the different stages and photographing a great number of smaller bands on the other stages as well as the bigger names appearing on the Main Stage and the ‘Calling Out’ Stage.

These are a small selection of images from Kendal Calling 2013:

 Music Photography: Hybrid.9 Promo Shoot

Cheshire band Hybrid.9 took advantage of our special offer on band photography to celebrate this years Crewe Live. After our consultation we decided on a location shoot and using the Urban Portrait series as inspiration we chose a location in Crewe that offered us a variety of backdrops in close proximity.

The photos certainly fit in well with the Urban Portrait project and Hybrid.9 are pleased with the results:

The band arrived one light-fading evening at a location suggested by Simon & Tina to give a fantastic local backdrop to the band photos. Working inside & out the pair worked with us to achieve some great band shots which are really happy with. It was our first photo shoot so not entirely sure how it was going to go, but we were in good hands. The pair had ideas which fitted well with our expectations and produced some strong imposing shots, even though most of the time we were having a laugh. Really pleased with the photos, and had some very positive comments about them.
Thanks to Simon J Newbury Photography.

Music Photography: Australian Pink Floyd & Hawkwind – Live From Jodrell Bank

Artists: Australian Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, The Time & The Space Machine, The Lucid Dream, Forecast
Venue: Jodrell Bank Observatory: Live From Jodrell Bank Transmission 004
Photographer: Simon J. Newbury

Quite possibly one of the best backdrops to a music festival, Jodrell Bank in Cheshire makes a wonderful setting and all the more nice in the summer sun! Simon J. Newbury Photography has photographed every ‘Transmission’ to date and this year the events were kicked off with the Australian Pink Floyd and Hawkwind.

We have photographed both bands previously and I know that both bands put on a wonderful visual show. Hawkwind have a series of fantasy characters and the light show put on by Floyd is amazing. It was also great to see Forecast on the bill. We have photographed them many times locally at The Box and even gave them their first ever gig at Boxjam a few years ago!

Music Promo Photography: Beth England

Music Promo Photography: Beth England

To celebrate being the official photographers to Crewe Live for the 4th year running we ran a special offer throughout May. The promotion was very popular and we booked a lot of bands and musical artists. The most recent shoot was with Knutsford singer/ songwriter Beth England.

Simon J. Newbury Photography is available for a whole range of music photography. As well as live music photography at gig venues across Cheshire and the North West (and most frequently at The Box in Crewe where we are the official photographers) we offer music documentary photography, festival photography, promo photography and album artwork photography. We can photograph either in a studio environment or out on location.

Beth opted for a location shoot and we decided that a rural shoot would suit her image and style of music. For some reason Lock 57 in Hassall Green came to mind and the location was perfect. We chose our time very well as the field alongside the canal lock had just been mowed with the tractors and agricultural vehicles working away in the distance which made for the most romantic of rural Cheshire backdrops. Not only that, we were fortunate to have a beautiful red barge pass through the lock which made for the perfect colour co-ordination with Beth’s red hair!

Although the number 57 has nothing to do with Beth’s music, she is considering writing a song to go along with the number of the lock! Beth was an absolute pleasure to work with as well as being a fantastic musician! Please check out her Facebook page via the link below!

Beth said:

Thank-you so much for doing them for me, I’m so happy with how they’ve turned out! Amazingly happy!

Haslington Hall Wedding Photography: A Look Back!

Photography: Simon J. Newbury, Tina Newbury
Venue: Haslington Hall, Cheshire

Haslington Hall in Cheshire is a wonderful venue for weddings. It’s a really beautiful building with the facilities for both indoor and outdoor weddings.

In 2012 Simon J. Newbury Photography was privileged to share Becky & Adam’s wedding day. Thankfully the weather was onside and the wedding was in the gardens. It was a lovely day and the final album was very well received by the Bride & Groom!

New Website Launch

We have been working on a brand new website behind the scenes and are now very pleased to announce that our main photography website is now live.

We recently launched a brand new dedicated website for our wedding photography and we also have a dedicated site for our Urban Portraits. All sites are now live and all part of the Simon J. Newbury online family!

The new site has all the galleries that our old site had as well as a new offers page where we will be running regular photography special offers. We have also added some share buttons for Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus so you can share your favourite photos with your friends!

We really hope you enjoy the new site!
